We just found out today that 6 of our Jazz and Ballet students made Paso Robles High School’s Jazz’N Company. (3 girls making it in the company and 3 girls making apprentices for the company.
We also have a student that has won the regional and state level of SkillsUSA and is now on his way to the National level in Kansas City, Missouri. He attributes much of his success to one of our teachers here at PRYAF, Gilbert Mendez Jr., our Audio/Media & Sound instructor.
Matt’s letter to PRYAF is as follows.
Dear PRYAF,
My name is Matt Camou. I have been taking classes at PRYAF for 8 years now. I took multiple classes and was in some of the performances, break dancing and playing guitar. A couple years later, Gilbert Mendez started an audio production class, I was interested right away.
After a couple years in that class, I enrolled in a video production class at my school. During my second year at the high school, my video production class acquired some new sound equipment that no one knew how to use. I was the only one who was able to operate the new equipment thanks to my class with Gilbert at PRYAF. A few weeks after my video teacher discovered my knowledge with audio, he had me make several audio podcasts for my school. Later in the year, Mr. Cooper (Video Production Teacher), told me about a competition called SkillsUSA. This had many different events, including audio/radio production. My teacher highly recommended that I sign up and compete, so I found a partner for the two-man team and signed up. We won the regional contest and then went to San Diego to compete at state level. With my skills I learned at PRYAF and my teammate, Daniel’s amazing script writing skills, we won and now are on our way to the SkillsUSA National competition in Kansas City, Missouri to represent the state of California in audio/radio production. It will be held from June 20th to June 24th 2011. We hope to bring home a gold medal.
The California chapter of SkillsUSA is sponsoring a large portion of our expenses. However, we are responsible to raise the rest of the funds ourselves. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
If it weren’t for PRYAF and Gilbert Mendez, I would not have found a skill that I truly enjoy. Thank you PRYAF, for all you have given me!
Sincerely,
Matt Camou |

PRYAF THRILLER!!!
PRYAF dance students were invited to perform Michael Jackson’s
“Thriller” in Paso Robles downtown park on October 31st as part of the
entertainment for trick-or-treaters during Paso Robles Main Street’s
Safe and Fun Halloween. PRYAF partnered with Studio’s in the Park to
perform the signature jerking dance moves taught by Marc Jaeger a
dancer/ instructor that was in the original Michael Jackson Thriller
music video. Our Jazz and Break Dance students were invited to attend
additional practices in order to master the precision and techniques
taught to them. Our students were also in charge of creating their
own zombie costumes to add the final touches. Our students preformed
3 times that evening each time with a larger and more excited
audience. Our students were AMAZING; to see their performance that
was mastered in 4 evening rehearsals, click here: |
